Home Modification For Senior Citizen/Home Remodeling & Modifications
What are Home Modifications
We prepare a room for the new arrival. We do up the home for teenage. It is now time to do up the house for the elders, who gave everything to us.
Aging does not mean that the elderly becomes dependent. All aging means is that: we change the way we work, live and move.
What it means is to get our house or a part of it age friendly, be it entry into the house or making rooms age friendly.
Home modifications for senior living- are changes made by adapt living spaces to meet the needs of elderly people or people with physical limitations so that they can continue to live independently and safely. These modifications may include adding assistive technology or making structural changes to a home.
Modifications can range from something as simple as replacing cabinet doorknobs with pull handles to full-scale construction projects that require installing wheelchair ramps and widening doorways. It can be access to the house, working in the kitchen, using the bathroom. Check for a grab bar in the right place, or a ramp to get in through the back door. It may involve a wider door, a special sink or the installation of an elevator.
Other examples of home modifications include:
• Grab bars in the bathroom (including the bathtub, shower, and toilet)
• Handheld, flexible shower heads
• Handrails on both sides of staircases and for outside steps
• Lever-operated faucets that are easy to turn on and off
• Sliding or revolving shelves for cabinets in the kitchen
• Walk-in/ seamless showers
Need Home Modifications:
The main benefit of making home modifications is that they promote independence and prevent accidents. According to a survey, most of older people want to stay in their current homes as long as they can,” but as homes are not designed to accommodate the needs of older persons, this becomes difficult .
Most the homes elders are living are those where both the homes and the residents have grown old together, hence they need to be modified to meet the future needs of the residents. They need to be made elder friendly . A house that was perfectly suitable for a senior at age 55, may not be suitable as it is for a person 75 old but with minor changes can be made friendly for them.
Research by the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that home modifications and repairs may prevent 30% to 50% of all home accidents among seniors, including falls that take place in these older homes.*
