The founding chairman of the SRM group, Mr. T.R. Pachamuthu, was first and foremost a teacher. His vision was to build an academic environment that would foster growth, learning and self-knowledge for the generation of tomorrow. In 1968, he began the Florence Nightingale primary school that educates young boys and girls to this day. That same year he formed the Valliammai Society in honor of his mother, Mrs. R. Valliammai. They would form the cornerstones of the SRM Group of Educational Institutions.

In 1985, the SRM Engineering College was started at Kattankulathur, Chennai. In a short span of a few years the SRM Group initiated numerous SRM centers of learning. A clear indication of the progress made by the organization came in the year 2002, when SRM College of Dentistry was awarded the status of deemed university by the Ministry of Human Resources and Development, India. In the following years, the Engineering, Medical and Paramedical, and Science and Humanities colleges were brought under the ambit of SRM Deemed University.
